A recent Bloomberg Businessweek article shares nine ways employers bumble the hiring process. Here are a few:
- They write bad job ads. Many job ads give one boilerplate sentence on the company and the role, and then dive into an endless list of required (“must-have”) and preferred job qualifications, the article says. Job ads should say more about why a smart person would want to work for your company. Describe a day on the job and let readers know how working with you will enhance their careers.
- They don’t take advantage of the interview. Employers know they shouldn’t do the talking, but many get nervous and distracted and end up talking through the interview without learning about the candidate, the article says. Avoid cliche questions and review the candidate’s resume so you can ask intelligent questions about him or her.
