Demand for Temporary Doctors Increases

A worsening doctor shortage and expected increase in patients due to Obamacare has many hospitals hiring temporary, or locum tenens, physicians, according to a recent Forbes article.

Staff Care, the nation’s largest physician staffing firm, said its number of “temporary days filled” for its clients rose to 183,252 last year from 181,834 in 2010 even in a period where hospitals and health facilities are experiencing cuts in government health insurance programs.

And the locum tenens segment of health care staffing is projected to grow 7 percent to $2.1 billion from 2011, according to Staffing Industry Analysts, a Mountain View, Calif.-based advisor on contingent work.
